This is absolutely wild and I'm not sure why I've heard literally nobody in the US talking about it. And I found out about this by reading a British newspaper. I'm talking about a major US city with over 360,000 people. It has apparently already passed the point of return where it can no longer be saved. Not in a hundred years even when we're no longer alive, but science say that this could literally be in decades. I'm talking about New Orleans. There's a new study in nature sustainability that says Louisiana is on track to lose three quarters of its remaining coastal wetlands. Combine that with three to seven meters of sea level rise and the coastline could move up to 100 km inland. That actually doesn't just threaten New Orleans. It also puts Baton Rouge in the potential risk zone. The reason that this is alarming is because researchers are saying that it's not at risk. It's across the point of no return. And this is why I consistently go back to planetary boundaries. We have now crossed over six of nine. To put it bluntly, one of the climate experts said that even if climate change stopped today, the outcome for New Orleans wouldn't change. First of all, let's take a look at the historical reasons besides the obvious. There's oil and gas drilling and canal dredging which carved apart the coastline for most of the last century. The levees built to protect the city have also stopped the Mississippi River from depositing sediment that used to rebuild the land naturally. Louisiana has actually already lost enough land to equal roughly the size of Delaware. That's roughly a football field every 100 minutes. There was actually a plan to fix this, the mid-era sediment diversion project. It was actually funded by the BP oil spill settlement. But the project was actually cancelled last year by Louisiana's governor, siting costs and the fishing industry. This is seen as one of the biggest setbacks for coastal protection in decades. Researchers are also saying that relocation needs to start happening now. Right now it appears that there isn't a plan. And as a forever optimist, I would love to say that there are other cities that are also below sea level that have solutions to these problems. But at a certain point when the water so many meters, a lot of those solutions will no longer work. And of course, there needs to be a plan in place that first and foremost protects people.
