While some children rely on stuffed animals and blankets for comfort, Biggs, 40, says that the family’s robot vacuum soon became Wyatt’s “security blanket.” “One day out of nowhere, he got a hold of a screwdriver and just started unscrewing every single screw in the Roomba,” the mother of two recounts. “He had gutted the entire thing. It was all laid out on my floor and he took the entire thing apart at three years old. Credit: Sara Biggs “At the time where we had maybe four of them, he was wanting to run them all day long. He was driving everybody crazy,” Biggs laughs. “We would have vacuums running; nobody could hear anything. And we were like, ‘What are we going to do? We’re all going going nuts listening to these vacuums all day long.’” To solve the problem, Biggs’s dad suggested that the family set aside an hour a day with Wyatt where they could run experiments with the Roombas and play games. “That’s how our YouTube page started,” Biggs says of their channel, Wyatt’s World of Roombas. Credit: Sara Biggs After the page began gaining traction, Biggs put a request in her community’s local mom’s group, calling for old or broken Roombas to donate to Wyatt. For some, Wyatt fixed their Roombas and sent them back to their owners, but “most” people just let him keep them. Both Wyatt and Sawyer — who Biggs says has gotten to the point where he likes the vacuums “just as much as Wyatt” — had input on what the character design would look like, and they even designed a little plush toy to go along with the story. While Biggs has some plans to expand her Etsy shop and write a few more children’s books (with a Robbie the Robot Vacuum series at the top of her list), Wyatt has his sights set on a career in “3D printing.” “He’s got that engineering type of mind,” Biggs says. “He wants to know how everything works. We took apart TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Keurig machines, but he did always come back to the robot vacuums. Right now he’s in robotics club and learning about coding.”
