Let's turn my client's leftover gold project into a custom galaxy band. My client originally came to me with quite a bit of gold and silver. Our first project together was a shoreline bangle. Once this was cast, it was quite a bit of gold leftover along with lots of stones from her old pieces, so there was a custom galaxy layer and carefully selected to bring it. I chose a mix of emeralds, rubies and diamonds scattered across the band. Such a good color combination. I showed my client the proposed layout as well to get approval. I start by carving a wax model and show my client the wax model on the finger. After seeing what the wax model look like on the finger, she decided to go from a 10 millimeter to a 8 millimeter band, so it wasn't so big and heavy. I then make a mold from a very fine jeweler's sand. Delft clay pressing the wax model into the sand to create a perfect impression. Once the mold is ready, I melt down the gold and pour it in with a solid cast entirely from her original pieces. At this stage, the ring still has the raw sandcast texture. But my client wanted a high polish, so I carefully remove all the surface texture and bring the ring up to a pre-polished. Now comes the fun part, stone setting. The center stone is a diamond set with 16 points, so it truly becomes the star. Around it, I set the emeralds, rubies and smaller diamonds with a mix of stars and planets on each side, along with some small hand engraved stars. I wasn't sure how these size stones would go in a smaller band. I thought they may look too big, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. The best part about this ring is that it can actually be worn three different ways. You can wear it with the center diamond right in the middle, or slightly turn to the left or right. You rotate it, the galaxy pattern shifts and looks completely different. It almost feels like you've got three rings in one. This ring started as old jewelry, now it's something completely new and something that I'll actually wear every day. She has now two beautiful pieces made from original gold and silver. There was more gold left over, but instead of selling the remaining metal to me, she's already planning a third piece. This is why I love remodeling. Nothing's wasted and I love turning something old into something new.
