The warning signs don’t always look like warning signs. Sometimes they look like showing up for shift. Making everyone laugh. Answering, “I’m good.” Doing the job like nothing is wrong. And going home carrying something nobody else knows exists. First responders are trained to function when everything around them is falling apart. But being able to function through pain doesn’t mean the pain isn’t there. So listen differently. Notice the firefighter who suddenly gets quiet. The one who stops coming around. The one whose humor changes. The one who keeps saying they’re “just tired.” The one who insists they’re fine a little too quickly. You don’t have to diagnose them. You don’t have to fix them. Just don’t stop seeing them. Because sometimes the person everyone counts on is quietly wondering who they can count on. Strong people need people too.
