Anyone who has worked in healthcare long enough knows the distinct, animalistic cries of a human being who has lost their child. It defies our human language and goes completely beyond the standard capability of our vocal cords. For me, during my son's hospitalization and his passing, I never experienced this. My nervous system went into a protective, silent survival shock as I watched the person I love the most leave this Earth. Only now, three months after his passing, did I experience this scream for the first time. It is a raw, somatic release shared by humans across history and shared across the animal kingdom. A mother crying for her baby is a sound that will stick with you forever. To any loss mom whose body is running out of space to store the trauma: you are not broken.
