Veteran journalist Katie Couric, 69, recently shared that she experienced a frightening episode of sudden memory loss and was diagnosed with transient global amnesia, a rare but temporary condition. During the episode, she could not name the year and believed it was 2024. If you have never heard of TGA, you are not alone. It is a temporary condition in which a person suddenly cannot form new memories, often asking the same question over and over, while staying awake, alert, and able to recognize loved ones. Episodes usually last under 24 hours and, reassuringly, rarely happen again. Here is why this matters for your family. TGA can look a lot like a stroke, and the two are nearly impossible to tell apart in the moment. That is exactly why sudden memory loss should always be treated as an emergency until a doctor rules out something more serious. If an older loved one suddenly becomes confused or starts repeating themselves, do not try to wait it out at home. Call for help and get them evaluated right away.
