I’ve done commissions in the past, but this is my first time using VGen and I have learned a lot since I first started! Let me save you some time, here are some things I wish I knew when I first started: Having a VGen doesn’t AUTOMATICALLY mean you will have clients. Even as an artist with 100k followers across multiple social media platforms, I don’t often get commissions because I don’t advertise them. Yes, VGen also has an added feature of having a search engine built into it, but the majority of your clients will come from preexisting fans of your work. It is more important to build a fanbase first before doing commissions! Your Commission samples matter!! I’ve noticed that having actual dedicated commission samples versus just some random artwork that I made helps actually guide clients towards your artwork. Yes your art can be amazing, but from an advertising perspective there are PLENTY of other people who are also just posting their art. BE DIFFERENT! Add text, animations, etc, anything to stand out in the sea of other vgen artists! Communication is KEY! You don’t have to get to know every client personally, but part of the experience with commissioning someone comes with getting to speak to the artist! A lot of people really value REAL person to person interaction, which is why art has become so prevalent again. People are tired of AI slop and repetitive bot spam calls, say hi and include them in the experience! Even just a quick “here’s the sketch”, “now starting on lineart” will go a long way! A good client experience can turn into repeat customers! Every small business will tell you that their best business doesn’t come from the people that buy once or twice, but the people who notoriously come back again and again. Offering freebies and getting to know your regulars, building a connection, is something you can never replace! If your customers feel like you care, they are more willing to pay your prices and support you. Huge side note, they can also tell if you aren’t being genuine! Do NOT underprice yourself, there are people willing to pay for your artwork! I recently created a Microsoft excel spreadsheet (available for purchase on my VGen hehe) that will give you recommendations and help educate you on pricing your artwork as well as seeing commissions from a business perspective. You deserve to be paid fairly, with benefits like PTO and health insurance, and many people don’t take that into account when they price their artwork! Download the spreadsheet today and get started making commissions :) I’m still learning, but these are some of the biggest things that have helped me so far as I’ve started my commission journey on VGen! I am so lucky to be able to do art part time, and I hope everybody out there is able to do the same! What’s something you wish you knew when you started on VGen? 👀 Feel free to leave tips and tricks in the comments, let’s all support each other!! I want to bring back the supportiveness in the art community in 2026 :D
