It was my very first week on the floor after assisting. I didn’t do a test strand. I didn’t ask her about her hair history. I didn’t have a proper consultation. I put bleach throughout her hair. I sat her under the hooded dryer on HIGH. I walked away… And her hair began to smoke. Literal actual smoke. I genuinely considered physically running out of the salon… But I faced my (many) mistakes. I took accountability. I made the appointment about how Julie was feeling, not how I was feeling. I called on more experienced stylist. I came up with an action plan. … and I wanted to ☠️ the entire time. Somehow 10 years later, I’m still the stylist Julie chooses, and I am so wildly grateful for the grace she gifted me a decade ago. Your favorite stylist in this industry aren’t people who have never made a mistake or had a bad day. Some of the best stylist weren’t even the most talented on the “way to the top.” Your favorite stylist only has the oppertunity to be your favorite stylist today because they didn’t quit that day they f*cked up.
