Yesterday scared the absolute hell out of me. I was feeding Brett lunch. Nothing unusual, just spaghetti. I was sitting beside him, half watching something on TV while he was eating, when I heard him make a little choking sound. I looked over and immediately knew something wasn't right. He had gotten choked on a spaghetti noodle. It seemed like it was halfway down his throat and he couldn't get it swallowed or get it back up. He was coughing and gagging hard, making this awful gurgling sound, and snot was coming out of his nose. I couldn't just hand him a drink because he was still trying to clear whatever was stuck. And Dad went straight into PANIC MODE. I decided I was throwing him in the Expedition and taking him straight to the emergency room. I ran outside—BACK DOOR LOCKED. Had to run all the way around the house. Got Brett outside—PASSENGER DOORS LOCKED. So here I go running all the way around again to unlock the dang vehicle, then running back to get Brett. I'm about to help him into the Expedition when I finally really look at him... He's standing there completely calm. Looking at me like, "Dad... what in the world are you doing?" 😂 Meanwhile, my heart is about to beat out of my chest. I grabbed a rag and started cleaning his face. There was even a little piece of noodle still hanging out of his nose that I had to pull out. But he was breathing fine. Acting fine. Like NOTHING had happened. We went back inside, I cleaned him up, gave him some chocolate milk once I knew everything was clear, and Brett went right back to being Brett. Me? I needed about 30 minutes to come back down to Earth. 😂 It's funny now that I know he's okay, but in that moment there wasn't anything funny about it. When your child can't tell you what's wrong, and you see them struggling like that, your mind goes to the worst place in about half a second. Brett scared about 10 years off my life yesterday... And five minutes later he was probably wondering why Dad was the one acting crazy. 😂❤️ Never a dull moment in Brett's Life.
