One thing about narcissism,once you see the pattern, you can’t unsee it. The manipulation, the blame shifting, the rewriting of events, the need to control how everyone else perceives you eventually it all becomes predictable and there’s a strange kind of freedom in reaching the point where you no longer feel the need to defend yourself against every version of you they create. You stop explaining. You stop reacting. You stop trying to make someone understand something. They benefit from misunderstanding. If they want to believe in a version of you that does not exist then let them. Sometimes the biggest response is simply recognising the pattern, refusing to participate in it, and carrying on with your life.
