GLOBAL REPORT SHOWS WHERE U.S. KIDS RANK IN READING, MATH AND SCIENCE

This is the first time in three years that we are seeing how students perform on critical global tests measuring reading, math and science. The results for reading are sobering. Since 2022, average reading scores for American 15-year-olds plunged 14 points. Math and science scores were mostly flat during that time. Now, these tests, which are given by the education department in the U.S. compared the performance of high schoolers in nearly 90 countries. In the U.S., the gap in reading scores between the highest and lowest achieving students is bigger than in any other education system in the report. The U.S. ranks 13th overall in reading and science and 27th in math scores. It is outranked by some parts of China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada in all three subjects. And we do often hear from schools that it's very challenging for students to get students more engaged at a young age, but we are seeing across all age groups, the number of kids who say they read for fun every day has dropped to its lowest level in decades. People are not reading for fun. And that means they're not reading as much. Reading for fun has even dropped. People are not reading for fun. And that means they're not reading as much.
