Want to become a lawyer. Here are three tips. 1️⃣ Build a strong story for “why you want to be lawyer”. Everyone’s a sucker for a good story. Law school, law firms, scholarships. Compare these two stories: Applicant 1: I want to be a lawyer because my dad was a lawyer. It seemed interesting. Applicant 2: I want to be a lawyer because coming from a first generation household, the justice system wasn’t always transparent for people like me. So I took time out to volunteer at a local advocacy centre to help people and build a real passion for the law… Sometimes your strengths as a candidate lie, in what other people view as your weakness. 2️⃣ Learn to read quickly, and learn to speak concisely. Reading is so important as a lawyer, whether documents, contracts, reports. And usually under time pressure. Start building the ability to read loads, and focus on comprehension. How much can you understand and learn; after reading something once. No one wants to hire a lawyer who doesn’t know the short way of explaining something. No one cares how you speak to other lawyers - but how you speak to your client (who is paying your bill) is super important. Learn to speak about complicated topics concisely and simply. You can start now, pick a topic and see if you can explain it to someone who knows nothing about it. Thats 50% of what being a lawyer is about. 3️⃣ Follow Akkydoeslaw.
