Here are the five lawyer etiquette rules that law school doesn’t teach you 1. Don’t just flag the problem, bring the solutions. How do you propose we solve it. “I think it’s X, for these reasons” beats “what should I do?” every time, even when you’re wrong. 2. Work out how your partner likes to be communicated with. Some want a one-line email. Some want the full memo. Some want you to just call. Nobody will tell you which, watch, and adapt fast. 3. Reply, even if the reply is “on it.” People trust the associate who acknowledges things in two minutes. Silence makes them assume you’ve dropped it. 4. Never make anyone chase you for an update. If the timetable slips or you’re blocked, they hear it from you first. Chasing you once is annoying. Chasing you twice is a reputation. 5. Own mistakes the moment you spot them.
