SWIPE
This is George the grinder.
He usually codes all day without taking breaks.
This is Steve the optimizer.
He takes short breaks every few hours of coding.
They both encounter a very tough bug while programming.
Let's see how each of them handles it.
THE BUG APPEARS
George jumps straight into coding and decides to push through till the bug is fixed, no matter what.
Steve analyzes the logs, reproduces the issue, reviews recent changes and starts planning.
2 HOURS LATER
Tried 12 fixes and googled the same thing 5 times by now.
Proceeds to write code to implement the planned solution.
4 HOURS LATER
Still staring at the screen like it owes him money.
The solution didn't work, so he gets up and takes his dog for a walk.
5 HOURS LATER
"This is too hard, I quit!"
Comes back with a fresh mind and realizes the bug only happens when certain conditions line up.
7 HOURS LATER
Finally fixes the bug!
The best developers don't spend all their time writing code.
Moreover, they take regular breaks.
Breaks reset your thinking, help you see patterns you were too close to notice, and often save more time than pushing through.
How many hours per day do you write code?
