Every few months I see someone say: “You should only wear navy blue to an interview.” I disagree….. There is no credible research from the last 20 years showing that candidates are more likely to get hired specifically because they wore navy blue instead of black, gray, or another neutral color. Any neutral is great option. What research does show is: • First impressions form quickly. • Professional appearance influences perceptions of competence and professionalism. • Candidates who dress appropriately for the environment tend to be viewed more favorably than candidates who appear out of place. So instead of obsessing over a specific color, focus on this: Research the company. Read the room. Before your interview: • Review the company’s website, LinkedIn page, and social media. • Pay attention to how employees are dressed. • Ask the recruiter about the company’s dress code. Example: “Can you tell me a little about the company’s dress code and interview environment so I can prepare appropriately?” • Mirror the company’s dress code or go one level above it. That’s the advice I would focus on. Because showing up in a three-piece suit to an office where everyone wears jeans and polos can feel just as out of place as showing up underdressed. I’m going to speak for me personally. Black is the only color I would wear to an interview because it’s the color I feel most confident wearing. And that’s just me. That’s how I feel. Everybody is different. The last employee I hired wore a black suit, which is exactly why I don’t believe there’s one “right” interview color for everyone. One thing I generally don’t recommend is bright colors or busy prints. You don’t want what you’re wearing to distract from what you’re saying. The focus should be on your experience, your qualifications, and the value you bring to the role. Your attire should complement the conversation, not become the conversation. The bigger question isn’t: “What color should I wear?” It’s: “Did I research the company, read the room, and choose something that aligns with the company’s culture while still allowing me to present myself professionally and confidently?” In my opinion, that’s what candidates should be focusing on.
