Hiring Manager: "We've decided to move forward with another candidate."

A rejection email can actually turn into a job based on how you position yourself. Don’t burn the bridge because you didn’t get the offer. 1. Reinforce your interest in the email example: “Thank you for letting me know. While I’m disappointed, I really enjoyed meeting you and the team and remain very interested in the company. If circumstances change with this position or another opportunity opens that aligns with my background, I’d appreciate being considered.” Candidates decline offers all the time. They accept other offers, take counteroffers or simply change their minds. If you were their second choice, you could be the next call. And I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t want to be someone’s second choice.” Don’t look at it that way. When a hiring decision comes down to two strong finalists, the difference between #1 and #2 can be incredibly small. One candidate had slightly more industry experience. One had a specific skill. One gave a stronger example. You were still someone they were willing to hire and still could. This past month Michael’s San Diego branch interviewed two candidates for one position. They liked both candidates so much, they hired both. Hiring needs change. Additional positions get approved. Things happen. 2. Ask for feedback. You may not get it. Many companies won’t provide detailed feedback. Email example: “For my own learning, would you be willing to share any feedback from the interview that might be helpful to me moving forward?” If they give it to you, use it. Don’t respond emotionally. Don’t ask them to reconsider. Don’t disappear. Keep the door open. Because they will remember how you handled the rejection. And if their first choice declines, you want to be top of mind when they go back to their second choice. Make it easy for them to call you. #job #interview #careeradvice
