I made this tiny metal chair!

I spent a week at miniature school and the number one thing I wanted to accomplish was to get over my fear of soldering. And that is how I ended up in Linda den Besten's Studio Chair class. We started by annealing the metal, which is the process of heating it up so that it becomes more malleable. She provided jigs for us to form each shape, and there were a lot of fiddly bits. The coolest thing we did was use a lathe to make a threaded rod for our seat so that it can go up and down. We did some leather upholstery for the seat and spent way too much time with the jeweler's saw making extremely fine parts. But it was really cool when it like, and then it was time to face my fear and start soldering. Which admittedly didn't that great at first. Fortunately, we could always just throw things in the pickle to clean them off and try again. But one of my favorite things about Miniature School is being surrounded by people who are just as excited about a technique or a skill as you are. And after many hours of soldering, cutting, tinkering, and quenching, we ended up with a classroom full of the tiniest and most amazing vintage inspired studio chairs. I loved my first year at school so much and I can't wait until next year.
