Excuse me ma'am, ma'am, question for you. How old were you when you became a millionaire? Oh actually my husband's a billionaire. Hit right in red shirt. In the red shirt, yeah sir. Are you a billionaire? I was trying to hide. Forbes said I am but I'm not too sure. What's your name? Michael Lee-Chin. How did you become a billionaire? What line of business are you in? I'm in the investment business, the banking business, the nuclear business. Where you from? I'm from Jamaica and Canada. Are there any other billionaires in Jamaica? How did you get into this business? Did you come from a lot of money growing up? No, no, I went to Canada as a student with enough money to get me through one year, then I didn't know where second, third, nor fourth year was gonna come from. So what I did, I wrote to the Prime Minister of Jamaica and they gave me a scholarship. So that's why I got to finish university. You didn't come from a rich family? No, definitely not. My mom was an orphan when I was born and I was both of us were adopted. When you think about yourself in the top 1%, what do they all have in common? What's that one trait that the wealthiest people you know have in common? They own assets. Rich people became wealthy by doing five things. Number one, they own a few high quality businesses. Number two, make sure they understand them. No. 3, they make sure they're in strong long-term growth industries. No. 4, they make sure that they hold for the long run. So I said, okay, what business can I buy that will give me those qualities? And I bought a mutual fund management company in Canada. I spent $500,000 on it, borrowed more than my net worth. Four years later it's worth 3.5 million. So how does somebody buy a business if they don't have a lot of capital? Because you didn't have a lot of money when you bought that business. If somebody wants to buy a business in today's world, what would you tell them to do? Well, I had to borrow to invest. I had a cash flow because I was selling mutual funds. So I said, if you have cash flow, use your cash flow to borrow and then invest in high quality businesses. She mentioned you gotta be in the right industry. In the next one to two years, what is the best industry people should be getting into right now? There's a saying, whenever there's a shift in the dominant source of energy, there's a shift in economic power. Right now there's a shift occurring towards nuclear. You know that they don't teach this in school, right? I know that they don't teach this in school. Definitely not, but you learned this yourself? I had to go to the school of hard knocks. Hundred percent. Let me ask you this, how old are you today? I'm 75. 75? Yes. No, you're not. Yes, I am. How do you look so sharp and so young at 75 years old? I work hard, I keep my mind active and I've always exercised. Are you happy? I'm extremely proud and extremely fulfilled. Does money buy happiness? No. So where does your happiness come from? My happiness comes from my mantra, doing well by doing good, doing well by uplifting others. Over these 75 years of your life, I'm gonna challenge you, take me back to the most life-changing conversation you ever had. What is the greatest piece of advice that you received throughout your career? The best advice I can give to anyone is number one, identify a role model, someone who you'd like to emulate. But make sure the person, that role model is the best in the world. No. 2, get the recipe. How did this person do it? And thirdly, don't change the recipe. Do exactly what that person did. Love that right there. Last thing I'd like to say is to be successful, you have to have a PhD. That's not my school PhD. Poor, hungry and driven. But when you're successful, your kids will also have a PhD. Papa has dough. Hahaha. So you didn't come from a rich family, but a rich family came from you. Exactly, exactly. You got amazing advice my friend. I appreciate that. Thank you very much. That was the first ever Jamaican, I think Caribbean billionaire I've ever interviewed on the School of Hard Knocks. He was out here in Monaco, just gave an amazing interview and I love these interviews because I always ask people what's the best industry, what's the best skill people should look to master, get into in today's world. He said nuclear energy. Everybody's always talking about AI, sales, nuclear energy. Listen to that niche and look up what he's saying because he is not wrong. Great interview out here in Monaco. We gotta keep finding these billionaires out here to figure out how they got rich. You guys, come on.
