Hook
Do you have a puppy that bites, nips, and it's just getting really annoying? Now, there are ways to fix this. A puppy bites because one of two reasons, mostly. One, because it's bored, or two, because it's overstimulated. And there is a third, we'll come on to that. So the first way, if a puppy is bored and it's biting, you need or wants an outlet. So try to redirect into a toy. Now, this is one of the first toys I ever got, Max, which is just a bite cushion or a bite sleeve or whatever it is. He came over, started biting at me, completely ignored him. Picked up a toy, give him, "Take!" And then give him something to do. Give him that outlet. Now, some dogs are genetically more likely to be nippy and bitey. So we're talking German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, those types of breeds. So if you've got one of those, just be prepared that you are going to get bit a few times. Sometimes they just run up and bite in the back of the leg, just for the fun of it. You just have to breed that you have and make sure you are fully prepared for that. The second point being, is your dog overtired? Puppies need up to 18 hours of sleep. If they don't get that amount of sleep, they start acting out like a toddler. So they're gonna be barking, they're gonna be annoying. So really think, is my dog getting enough sleep? And if not, try to enforce that sleep. What I've done is I crate trained him from the day I got him. As soon as he started acting over tired, he went in his crate to sleep for a few hours. It fixes so many issues. Now, I know some people don't like crate training. In some countries it's actually illegal, I believe. So it might not be for everyone, but try and get your dog to sleep because if you don't, you're asking for issues. And that third and final one is your dog teething. So as they start getting slightly older from that puppy stage, losing their puppy teeth, they're gonna want to chew things. I've got chunks missing out my skirting boards, out the drywall, you name it. My house, he's chewed it up at least once. Now, where you can help your teething is give them something to chew. What I like to do with Max is get like a frozen flannel or a tea towel, soak it either water or bone broth, and then give it to him. He would chew it, it would soothe his teeth, relax him, and it'll stop him chewing up the other stuff in my house. Now, when they are going through if you take your eyes off them for a couple of minutes, they are gonna chew something up. So just be patient with it. The teething and biting stage, it does come to an end, which then leads you into the adolescent stage, which is a whole different can of worms. However, stick with it, be patient with them. Try to redirect from onto toys, try to give making sure they're not getting enough sleep, and it will fix those issues.
