Dave Sanders was a teacher and coach who became one of the greatest symbols of courage during the Columbine High School massacre. The attack took place on April 20, 1999, when two heavily armed students killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 others before taking their own lives, forever changing the way school shootings were viewed in the United States. As the violence unfolded, Sanders immediately put the safety of others before his own, running through the hallways to warn students and staff to evacuate or hide, helping many people escape the gunmen. While continuing to guide others to safety, he was shot by the attackers. Despite being critically wounded, his brave actions had already saved countless lives by keeping people away from danger. He remained trapped for several hours without immediate medical treatment because of the ongoing emergency and later died from his injuries. His extraordinary selflessness, leadership, and willingness to sacrifice himself for his students and colleagues have made him one of the true heroes of Columbine, and he continues to be remembered as an enduring example of bravery and dedication.
