Don Alejo Garza Tamez was a 77-year-old Mexican businessman, rancher, and hunter who became a symbol of resistance in Mexico after confronting members of Los Zetas at his ranch in Tamaulipas in November 2010. When armed men from the criminal group arrived at Rancho San José and demanded that he abandon his property, Don Alejo refused to give up the land he had built over many years. He allowed his workers and family members to leave while he stayed behind, preparing to defend his home. Using his experience as a hunter and marksman, he positioned weapons around the ranch and confronted the attackers when they arrived. A violent shootout followed, during which several members of the group were reportedly killed or injured, but Don Alejo also lost his life. His story became remembered as an example of courage and determination in the face of organized crime, while also showing the extreme violence experienced in parts of Mexico during that period. Los Zetas were a Mexican criminal organization originally formed by former military members and became known for their extreme brutality, involvement in drug trafficking, kidnappings, extortion, and other crimes, becoming one of the most feared criminal groups in Mexico.
