Many supporters and some protesters gathered at Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium today in anticipation of a visit by India’s prime minister Narendra Modi. Modi is expected to greet thousands of supporters this evening at an event that makes up part of his three-day visit to Australia. triple j hack spoke to attendees about how they’re feeling about the visit. Prime minister Modi is hugely popular among a large swathe of the Indian diaspora who say he has raised India's international profile, fostered its clean energy revolution, and delivered an extraordinary infrastructure boom. But others in the Indian diaspora say Modi's government has institutionalised discrimination against minorities, particularly Muslims. The Alliance Against Islamophobia vowed to protest outside the event later tonight. Today, Australia and India agreed to expanding the relationship across defence and security, education, science and technology, energy security and critical minerals, and pursue unconditional repatriation of a First Nations ancestor held in India, and the repatriation of Telugu remains housed in Australia. #triplej #india
