Hospitality is getting smashed right now and the middle is about to get wiped out completely. The cash economy is gone so every wage cost hits the books properly now. A hospitality worker on a public holiday can cost $79 an hour. Ozempic is rising and people are drinking less, which kills the high margin items like alcohol and dessert. Costs keep rising but owners cannot pass them on to already pressured consumers. This is a K-shaped economy. The bottom is being replaced by $2 coffees and $2 pizza at 7-Eleven. The top is fully booked TikTok restaurants where people happily spend more for the experience and the status. The middle is dying. People are not buying the dish. They are buying the feeling. A restaurant in Melbourne played In Da Club on a JBL speaker for a birthday and I still Instagrammed it. That costs nothing and creates a memory.
