Who would have thought that a plastic bottle headed for the trash could become dozens of feet of strapping. First he mounts a sharp blade to a small board with a few screws. By adding spacers beside the blade, he controls the strip with a smaller gap makes a thinner strip, a wider gap makes it stronger. Next, he cuts off the bottles bottom and trims the starter strip. He feeds it into the blade opening and slowly pulls. As the bottles spin, the body is cut into one long ribbon. The hardest part is keeping the bottle steady. If it tilts, the strip becomes uneven. If he pulls too fast, it can snap and he has to start again. So he keeps the same bottle angle and lets the bottle rotate smoothly against the blade. The strip can bundle lumber, hold tools, or make light repairs. Some plastic strips also shrink when heated. When he wraps the strip tightly around a joint, then warms it evenly with a heat gun. As it shrinks, it grips the surface more tightly. But this is only for light duty use. For lifting, climbing, or anything load-bearing, proper rope and rated straps are required.
