I tried to take my own life four months ago during an internet ethicist's take incoming. I'm the Johns Hopkins medical ethicist that people were trying to cancel for providing context on the Nick Baumel situation. I want to read you an excerpt. Social media plays the role that the ringing of the church bells used to play in the past. That's the way that people know that a lynching is going to happen. The platforms, she explained, reproduce certain age-old mechanisms by which a community worked itself into collective violence. Lynching, when a group follows its moral outrage to the point of hurting or killing someone, the tyranny of cousins at work is a communal impulse, a public show of what happens to those transgressing the tribe. The aim of it is to communicate and spread false rumors that consistently spread in advance of mass violence.
