This student usually books an earlier class, so I was surprised when I saw she'd booked a 10 p.m. lesson. I couldn't help but think, Shouldn't this kid be asleep by now? It was our first late-night class together. When I noticed her yawning, I teasingly asked, "Are you sleepy?" Her mom and I couldn't stop laughing as we watched her fight to stay awake. She kept losing focus because she was clearly exhausted, but she never complained and participated until the end of the lesson. Before we said goodbye, her mom told me they'd been struggling to book an earlier class because my schedule has been so full lately. They decided to sacrifice her bedtime because she really likes taking lessons with me. I couldn't help but feel touched. Moments like this remind me why I love what I do. Sometimes, it's not just about teaching English—it's about knowing you've become someone a child genuinely looks forward to learning with.
