These are the six most expensive pennies that have sold in 2026 so far. Coming in at number six is the 1983 Lincoln penny and it sold for $24,000 at auction. 1983 pennies are supposed to be made of 97% zinc. This one was struck on the wrong planchet and was struck with copper. There are only around 10 copper pennies from 1983 that have ever been found. Coming in at number five is a 1969-S Lincoln cent, FS-101, Doubled Die Obverse, MS-63 BN (PCGS), CAC. This one sold for $26,000 at auction this year because if you pause this video and zoom in on the "In God We Trust" lettering, you can also see this has a massive double die. You can also zoom in on the 1969-S date. Coming in at number four is a 1909-S Lincoln cent, V.D.B., MS-66+ RD (PCGS), CAC, CMQ. If you know anything about coin hunting, this is the holy grail of pennies. And the reason this one sold for $52,800 at auction is because it was graded an MS-66. Coming in at number three at a whopping $63,000 sold is the 1914-S Lincoln cent, MS-66 RD (PCGS). There were only ever four million of these created and this one was graded an MS-66. Coming in at number two is the 1926-S Lincoln cent, MS-64+ RD (PCGS), that sold for $72,000 at auction this year. Only 4.5 million of these pennies were created and this one was graded an MS-64. And the most expensive penny that has sold at auction just this year is the 1943-S Lincoln Cent, Struck on a Bronze Planchet, AU-55 (PCGS), Gold CAC, CMQ. And the reason why this one sold for so much is because 1943 pennies were actually supposed to be made out of steel, but this one was accidentally struck on a bronze planchet, making it one of the most expensive pennies to sell so far in 2026.
