White USB ports. All right, before I start with this one, you've probably seen a blue USB port sitting next to a black one and assumed the colors were just a design choice. They're not. Every color means something. And once you know what, you'll stop plugging things into the wrong port. And this video is exactly about that. Let's go back to the beginning. White USB ports are USB 1.0 and 1.1 from 1996. First ones ever made. If you've ever seen a white USB port, you are looking at a genuinely old computer. Before USB, plugging anything into a computer was a mess. Your printer had one type of port. Your mouse had a different one. Your keyboard, something else again. Every device came with its own connector, its own port, and the back of a computer looked like a puzzle. USBs entire pitch was simple: one port and everything plugs into it. Speed wise, white ports could move about 1.5 megabytes per second. To put that in perspective, a single photo from your phone today is around 5 megabytes. So this port would need about 3 seconds just to move 1 picture. But that was fast in 1996. The old serial ports USB replaced were roughly 100x slower. Plugging in a printer and having it work quickly genuinely felt like magic back then. Where it struggled was anything big. Copying a CD's worth of music, around 700 megabytes, would take over an hour. But that barely mattered at the time, because nobody was moving files that way. Music and software came on physical discs you put straight into the computer. Everything else lived on the hard drive inside. So people mostly used white USB ports for keyboards, mice, and early digital cameras. White ports vanished once USB 2.0 arrived. But USB 1.1 never fully died. Cheap car stereos, budget speakers, basic MP3 players still use it because playing an MP3 from a thumb drive needs almost nothing. Why pay for a faster chip when the slow one does the job?
