The company that built this machine no longer exists 🛠️🌎 This is a Heidenreich & Harbeck bevel gear generator, built in Hamburg in 1939 and still cutting 2 and 3.5 module bevel gears today. The nameplate on its cast iron body has outlasted the factory itself, which shut down decades ago while its machines kept running in workshops around the world. The process it performs is called gear generating. Instead of stamping or molding teeth, the cutter and the steel blank roll against each other in a precisely synchronized motion, carving each tooth profile the same way two finished gears would eventually mesh. The constant stream of cutting oil keeps the steel from overheating and preserves the accuracy the whole method depends on. Cast iron this old has one hidden advantage. After nearly nine decades, every internal stress in the metal has settled, making the machine's frame more dimensionally stable than the day it left Hamburg. 87 years of production without a single line of code.
