In 2017, the small community of Osgood, Indiana, was shocked by the deaths of two young children. The first victim was 2-year-old Desiree McCartney, who died in May 2017. Months later, 11-month-old Nathaniel Ritz also died after remaining hospitalized following the incident. Authorities investigated the deaths and eventually focused on 13-year-old Nickalas Kedrowitz. According to investigators, Kedrowitz confessed and said he believed he was freeing the children from what he described as “some sort of hell.” The case went through a lengthy legal process. In 2021, Kedrowitz was found guilty of two counts of murder. Then, in February 2022, a judge sentenced him to two consecutive 50-year prison terms. That's a total of 100 years. The case raised difficult questions about juvenile crime, mental health, accountability, and how the justice system should respond when the offender is a child.
