On December 24, 1994... Air France Flight 8969 was hijacked by four armed members of the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria. The Airbus A300 was seized at Algiers Airport before it could depart. The hijackers demanded the release of prisoners and threatened to kill hostages. During the 54-hour ordeal... Three passengers were killed. Eventually, the aircraft was allowed to leave Algeria and fly to Marseille, France. French authorities feared the plane could be used in a major attack. When negotiations reached a dead end... France's elite counter-terrorism unit, GIGN, stormed the aircraft. The assault lasted only minutes. The hijackers were killed... And the remaining 229 hostages were rescued.
