There are lines that exist between our worlds. The black world and the white world. You can feel those lines in Darwin. a place where DO NOT SERVE signs still exist on the windows of corner stores, and the only faces plastered across those walls are the original people of this land. Our faces. Darwin - where a white man can get behind the wheel, run over an Aboriginal man and take his life, and because of the colour of his skin, walk away without serving a day in prison. Yet our people are criminalised from the age of ten. 99% of youth incarcerated in the Northern Territory are Aboriginal. Sit with that. Look at the line between those two worlds. The Intervention. The police. The prisons. The surveillance. The punitive and arbitrary policies of the CLP. These things don't exist in a vacuum. They exist in a place where Aboriginal people are still treated as a problem to be managed rather than the original people of this land. There is a concentrated effort to eradicate us. To criminalise our children. To fracture our families. To make us feel unwelcome on our own Country. Our Country is rich. Our people have been made to live in poverty on it. Our children are incarcerated on it. Our families are policed on it. And our land continues to be extracted from it. That is the line between our worlds. It has never been about us not belonging here. It has always been about who gets to decide what happens on this Country — and who gets to profit from it. We are the original people.
