The Huayhuash Trek: what I wish I knew before going 🇵🇪🏔️ I did the Huayhuash Circuit with @Inkaland Treks and even with an incredible team supporting us, this trek was HARD. Here are a few things I’d want to know beforehand: GETTING THERE
✈️ Fly into Lima
🚌 Take an ~8–9 hour bus to Huaraz OR
✈️ Fly about an hour from Lima to Huaraz A lot of trekkers take the bus because the gradual climb in elevation may feel easier than flying straight into Huaraz, but we said eff it and chose to fly. ACCLIMATIZATION
⛰️ Huaraz sits at around 10,000 ft, and the trek goes MUCH higher
🥾 We spent 3.5 days in Huaraz before the trek
🏔️ We did acclimatization hikes to Laguna Llaca and Laguna Churup before heading out
💧 Hydrate constantly and take it easy 💊 I also took Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude. I picked it up from a pharmacy in Lima for around $15 USD, but definitely talk to your doctor before your trip about whether it’s appropriate for you and how/when to take it. TREK INFO
🥾 About 65 miles / 105 km
📆 8 days, 7 nights for our itinerary
⛰️ Most hiking takes place above 12,000 ft w/ passes around 15,000–16,000+ ft
🎒 We carried daypacks while mules carried our heavier duffels
⛺️ Camping every night, with one optional hostel night on our route
📵 Very little to no service THINGS I’M VERY GLAD I BROUGHT
☀️ SPF, sunglasses + a hat
🧤 Warm layers, gloves + a beanie
💧 Electrolytes
💊 Personal first-aid kit
🔋 Power bank
🧻 Toilet paper + wipes
👟 Camp shoes
🎧 Downloaded music for the longer days 📗 Kindle for downtime at camp FINAL THOUGHTS
Huayhuash absolutely lived up to the hype for me, but I wouldn’t call it an easy bucket-list trek. If you’re prepared for the altitude and ready to work for the views, put this one on your list. 🫶🏻 #huayhuash #cordillerahuayhuash #peruhiking #perutravel #backpackingadventures
