This is Morning Glory Pool, and it wasn’t always this colorful. It used to be known for its deep blue color, but for DECADES people threw coins, rocks, trash, logs, and other random objects into it. 🫠 All that junk contributed to reduced water circulation and cooler temperatures. And here’s where it gets crazy… Different heat-loving microorganisms thrive at different temperatures. As parts of the pool cooled, orange and yellow microorganisms were able to grow in areas where they couldn’t before. Basically, people threw so much crap into a Yellowstone hot spring that they helped change its appearance. 😭 Even crazier, park employees once nicknamed Morning Glory Pool “the garbage can” because of how much stuff visitors threw into it. And yes, people STILL throw things into Yellowstone’s thermal features. Please don’t be that person. 😂 Morning Glory Pool is in the Upper Geyser Basin, and you can walk to it from the Old Faithful area. Even though people have treated this pool so terribly, it still is absolutely beautiful in person. Save this one for your Yellowstone trip! 🫶
