This dramatic burst of water is known as a cross sea a rare phenomenon that occurs when multiple wave systems traveling in different directions meet. These swells can originate from separate weather systems, sometimes thousands of kilometers apart. When they intersect at sharp angles, their combined energy can create steep, chaotic waves that look almost like an explosion. Seeing several wave systems intersect at once is particularly uncommon, and these conditions can be dangerous for swimmers and vessels because of unpredictable wave patterns and currents.
