RENAISSANCE PEARL PENDANTS

some of the most imaginative jewellery ever made started with oddly shaped pearls. So during the Renaissance, pearls were among the most valuable gemstones in the world. And when a diver found one that was an unusual shape that couldn't be used in a traditional setting, this wasn't seen as a flaw, but rather an inspiration. The jewelers looked at it and thought, what could this become? For example, this curved pearl became the body of a lizard, while others were transformed into ships, unicorns and mythical creatures, surrounded by gold enamel and precious gems.
