What to know before summiting👇🏼 🏔️ You need a permit (duh) that you can get on Recreation.gov. 🏔️ The last couple miles to get to the trailhead is a rough gravel road. Doable in a sedan, just take it slow. 🏔️ Although the hike is only 8.6 miles (according to AllTrails) it feels MUCH longer. It can take anywhere from 8-14+ hours. Give yourself PLENTY of time. As an experienced hiker who works out daily, it still took me 12 hours because of having to navigate, plus foot and knee pain. 🏔️ It’s generally recommended to bring 5 L of water per person. I found this to be overkill and only brought 2.5 L on a cooler, windier day and it was more than enough for me PERSONALLY. 🏔️ When you reach the summit DO NOT stand next to the edge. The ground can give away beneath you as it is extremely unstable. A photo is not worth your life. 🎒What you’ll need: 1. Print out your permit and carry it on you with your government issued ID card. 2. Water + plenty of snacks (you’ll need them) 3. Electrolytes!!! 4. Pain relievers (I prefer ibuprofen) 5. Sunglasses but goggles are ideal to keep ash out of your eyes 6. Face covering like a gaiter or bandana 7. I highly recommend a hat to keep ash out of your scalp. My scalp was FULL of ash and my hair felt super gritty when I got home. 8. Foot gaiters are non negotiable as they’ll prevent dirt and rocks from getting into your shoes, making the climb MUCH more comfortable. 9. An SOS device such as a Garmin InReach. There is no signal on the trail. 10. Poles (know how to use them first) 11. Something to prevent foot blisters like cream, bandages or toe guards. 12. I always recommend bringing a power block and charger in case your phone dies and you need to navigate. Although this is considered an “easier” summit as it’s not as technical, please don’t underestimate it! #hike #Hiking #mountsthelens #mtsthelens #mountaineering
