Why it worked

The video uses relatable humor by exaggerating the common perception of software engineering interviews, which often focus on abstract technical problems and side projects, and applying it to a completely different field (medicine). This unexpected juxtaposition creates a comedic effect that resonates with viewers familiar with tech culture.

Summary

This video humorously contrasts the interview process for software engineering roles with how other professions, like medicine, might be interviewed. It highlights the focus on technical skills and side projects in software engineering by showing a doctor being asked about designing hospitals and performing mass surgeries, which are irrelevant to their actual medical practice.

Structure

1Introduction of the premise: doctor interview like software engineering
2Doctor's credentials vs. interviewer's focus on side projects
3Interviewer dismisses medical school, asks about technical skills
4Doctor's confusion about irrelevant technical questions
5Interviewer asks about scalability and mass surgeries
6Doctor's inability to answer and interviewer's dismissal

So you want to be a doctor. Correct. I graduated top of my class at Harvard Med. Don't care. Do you have any side projects you've done recently? Side projects? Yeah, like DIY surgeries, vaccine synthesis. The last guy I interviewed created his own version of COVID at home. Is that even legal? Okay, no side projects. Not high agency. What's this gap in your resume? I was in medical school. We value real-world experience over pursuing further education. You can't be a doctor without going to school. I scored a 527 on my MCAT. You did well on a test? I don't care. Let's start on the technical. Technical? First question: Help me design an entire hospital. I have no idea. They didn't teach me this in school. Why do I need to know how to design an entire hospital when I'm working in a single room? Last question: How could you perform 1000 surgeries at once? That doesn't make any sense. I can only do one at a time legally. Scalability is an extremely important principle at this company. Wrong answer. Last question: Look, this guy is dying and has an extremely rare type of liver disease. We need you to diagnose him and then save his life. How am I expected to solve this extremely specific and niche technical problem without explicitly studying it beforehand?
