TikTok is really machines working together to keep you doomscrolling the whole day. One, figures out exactly what you want to watch. And the other, makes sure there's never a good moment to stop watching. Together, they're almost impossible to beat. This is why TikTok has transcended different generations. From the young ones to the old ones, they're always on their phones on TikTok. My name is Michael Munavu, I'm a senior software engineer and in this video, I'll take you through the engineering that helped TikTok scale to billions of users. For TikTok, attention is currency, attention is gold. And this is where the fast machine comes into play. The fast machine watches how you watch TikTok. Did you scroll fast enough? Did you pause on a video? Did you rewatch this? The likes do not matter. What actually matters is how you watch the first video. This gives TikTok enough context to be able to generate the next two or three videos for you. And because videos are short, TikTok is able to gather millions of clues about you in just a minute. It's able to then queue up the next that two videos that will actually keep you hooked. The second machine makes sure you never stop. When you open it, it doesn't load your whole feed. It actually loads just one video. And in that one video, it will get context on videos to show you next. If you watch one video for too long, it is a genre watch it. It will be able to generate the next two or three videos, maybe two or three times. If you're watching educational content, it will train generate that genre of content for the next two or three videos, making sure you're hooked all the time. I've already told you how this works.
