If you've ever bought a jar of coconut oil, used it once or twice and then watched it sit in the pantry and expire, and then you had to throw it out, well, you're not alone. Most people have no idea how much stuff this can actually do. And I learned a few things researching for this video. And I've been using coconut oil for years. Well, today we're counting down 13 coconut oil uses that will save you some serious money. So let's get started. Number 13, natural oral care. If you hate harsh alcohol-based mouthwashes that burn your mouth, this is an old ancient trick that has made a massive comeback. It's called oil pulling. What you do is swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for several minutes. Then spit it in the trash. Do not spit it down the drain because coconut oil hardens, the last thing you want is it building up in your pipes. But as you swish, the oil mixes with your saliva and it helps reduce bacteria that's living around your teeth and gums. Studies have found that oil pulling can help reduce plaque and improve bad breath and support healthier gums. Afterwards, just brush your teeth like normal. And it's going to leave your mouth feeling unbelievably clean, freshen your breath and there was no alcohol burn to get there. Number 12, heal skin scrapes faster. I first learned this trick playing softball. When you're sliding into bases, you can get what we call strawberry skin. It's that raw scrape from the friction of the dirt and gravel. It's very painful. Instead of letting it dry out and scab over, clean it with soap and water first and then put a thin layer of coconut oil on it and cover it with a bandage. Coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties that help protect against infection while creating a protective barrier as it heals. So you don't get that hard crack scab that hurts every time you move. It works for all scrapes, not just sliding across home plate. Number 11, get super glue off your skin. We've all had this happen. You're working with super glue and accidentally get some on your fingers. Well, now your fingers are stuck together or stuck to whatever you were working on. Most people reach for nail polish remover. And that works, but acetone is harsh and it can burn raw skin. So instead, rub a generous amount of coconut oil directly onto the glue and then let it sit for a few minutes and then keep working it with your fingers. The oil breaks down that bond and the glue will roll right off. There's no burning and no harsh chemicals on your skin. As an added bonus, the coconut oil moisturizes your hands while you're at it. After that, just wash with soap and water and you're done. Number 10, remove eye makeup without wipes. Makeup remover wipes are not cheap. And if you use them every night, that adds up really fast. So, dab a tiny amount of coconut oil onto a cotton ball. Gently press it over your eyes for a few seconds and then wipe. It lifts off waterproof mascara, liner and eyeshadow all with barely any rubbing. And one jar of coconut oil can last you months of nightly use. So you can stop buying those makeup remover wipes over and over again. Number nine, replace butter in baking. You're not out of butter mid-recipe or your baking for someone who can't eat dairy. Coconut oil is a straight swap. So use one for one for butter. If the recipe calls for melted butter, melt the coconut oil. If the butter needs to be solid, keep the coconut oil solid. It works in cookies, muffins, quick breads and pie crusts. You're going to get that same richness, no dairy and nothing extra to buy. Number eight, soothe under your nose during a cold. With cold season coming up, this one is a game changer. When you've been blowing your nose for the past 10 minutes for two days, the skin right under your nose gets rubbed raw. It feels like sandpaper. But coconut oil is completely safe if your dog licks it. In fact, a lot of dog owners actually mix a little bit of it in their dog's food to help with dry itchy skin and give their coat a healthy shine. So for their paw pads, rub a small amount into each paw pad before bed. It softens that rough skin and helps cracked paw pads, heal and form a barrier that keeps the moisture in. You can even put socks on them for a few minutes so they don't track it across the floor. Your dog gets relief and you didn't have to buy an expensive product. We are halfway through this list and we haven't even gotten to number one. So make sure you stick around for number one because it's one of those tricks that you may not need today, but when you do need it, you're going to be happy that you know it. Number six, get gum out of hair without cutting it. When a kid goes to bed with gum in their mouth, or it just ends up in their hair somehow, the only option is scissors. But don't cut it. Work a generous amount of coconut oil into the gum and hair. Let it sit for a few minutes. The oil breaks down that sticky gum and the gum slides right out. There's no cutting, no damage and no haircut that nobody asked for. Plus, the coconut oil helps soothe the scalp and helps prevent frizz and static without looking greasy. Number five, keep stainless steel appliances streak-free. Specialty stainless steel cleaners are expensive and most of them are too heavy for everyday use. So, rub a tiny drop of coconut oil onto a microfiber cloth. Wipe it in the direction of the grain. You're talking very little, less than what you think you need. And wipe it in the direction of the grain. It actually fills in the fine lines in the steel and helps repel fingerprints and smudges instead of just cleaning them off. One application can last you all week. And now you don't need that separate stainless steel polish that's been sitting under your sink. Number four, protect your hair and stop frizz. I needed this one in Missouri. Y'all have some mad humidity over there. Anti-frizz serums and hair oils are expensive and most of them are too heavy for everyday use. So here's something that most people don't know. Coconut oil is one of the only oils that can actually penetrate the hair shaft instead of just sitting on top of it. That's going to help your hair hold onto its natural protein and it breaks less. And for everyday frizz and static, just melt a tiny bit between your palms and smooth it lightly over your dry ends. It's going to tame those flyaways, condition your hair and kill static without looking greasy. Number three, replace three products with one. Instead of buying body lotion, foot cream and cuticle oil, one jar of coconut oil can do it all. Right after shower, while your skin is still damp, rub a small layer over your arms and your legs to lock in moisture all day long. And for nails, dab a tiny drop onto your nail beds to stop cuticles from splitting and help prevent hangnails. For those cracked heels, rub a generous amount on your feet before bed. Then throw on a pair of old cotton socks. That lets it work all night long. That's three products you can now stop buying. Number two, help fresh eggs last longer. Here's an old farmer trick that comes in handy. Unwashed fresh eggs have a natural outer seal. Over time, air slowly gets through the shell's microscopic pores and moisture evaporates out. So if you rub a very thin layer of melted coconut oil over those unwashed shells, the oil fills in those microscopic pores and moisture inside and keeps them fresh much longer when stored in a cool place. Number one, lice treatment that actually works. A few years ago, my daughter brought home lice from school. I panicked. I hate bugs. But I did some research and we coated her hair completely with coconut oil, scalp to end. Then combed through it section by section with a fine metal lice comb. Don't rush. And make sure you're getting every single one. That's what made the difference for us. So, what are you going to try first? Or is there a coconut oil trick that I completely missed? Drop that in the comments. Thanks for watching.
