When you do pottery, you learn how to not get attached to your pieces. It might feel painful to cut up a piece you just spent hours making, but cutting a pot is actually one of the best ways to understand what’s happening beneath the surface. ✂️ Cutting it in half lets you see things you can’t always tell from the outside. You can check if your walls are even in thickness, whether your shape is symmetrical, how consistently you pulled your walls, and whether there are any areas that are much thicker or thinner than others. It’s also a great way to understand your form and proportions. Sometimes a piece can look perfectly balanced from the outside, but once you see the cross-section, you’ll notice areas that could be refined — maybe the base is too thick, the walls aren’t consistent, or the transition between sections could be smoother. #ceramics #pottery #potterystudio #markham #handmade
