you took me out for drinks but instead I tell you about Dolly Parton:
she started the Imagination Library because her dad couldn't read or write. it's now given more than 300 million books to kids.
in the 90s, she offered every 7th and 8th grader in her home county $500 if they AND their chosen "buddy" graduated high school. the dropout rate fell to 6%.
after wildfires devastated her hometown, she gave families who lost their homes $1,000 a month for six months, then surprised them with $5,000 for the final check.
she donated $1 million to COVID research at Vanderbilt, and later another $1 million for pediatric infectious disease research.
she helped raise $1 million for a new birthing center in her home county and still gives local kids $15,000 scholarships every year.
and that's just the stuff we know about. imagine how much she did for people privately that we'll never hear about.
