So one of the biggest predictors of whether your teenage son will open up to you is... Researchers have actually been studying this. Why some teenagers voluntarily tell their parents things while others slowly stop. And it's usually not what parents think. It's not how often that you check up on them or how perfectly the question is phrased. It's not how close the two of you used to be. Research on adolescent disclosure suggests one of the biggest influences is what happened the last time he told you something. Did his disclosure create understanding or did it create panic, criticism or judgment? Here's the hard truth: telling him he can come to you means very little if his previous experiences taught him otherwise. So the next time he shares something personal or honest, just thank him for sharing. If there's something important that needs addressing, a boundary, a consequence, do that after. Make sure he doesn't regret being open and honest first.
