“50/50 only works when the parents already get along.” But how are parents supposed to build trust and cooperation when one of them is prevented from actually parenting? Drapeau and colleagues followed 408 separated families for up to five years. The parents’ initial relationship quality did not predict later changes in father-child contact. But greater father-child contact shortly after separation did predict positive changes in the parents’ relationship over time. That doesn’t prove 50/50 magically eliminates every conflict. It does challenge the assumption that cooperation must already exist before shared parenting can work. Sometimes cooperation isn’t the prerequisite. Sometimes it may be part of the result.
