If you're going to the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn this Labor Day, here's everything you need to know before you go. First, this isn't just a parade. This is New York's Caribbean Carnival. A tradition Caribbean immigrants brought to New York generations ago. Carnival itself blends European masquerade traditions with African traditions of music, dance, resistance, and celebration. Now, the basics. Wear comfortable shoes and hydrate. Eastern Parkway is long, crowded, and you're going to be standing and walking for hours. Now if you do decide you want to sit, get there early. People post up along the route with folding chairs, coolers, and basically the entire family picnics. But you may not need to pack lunch because Brooklyn becomes one enormous Caribbean food court. People are selling jerk chicken, patties, roti, doubles, drinks, flags, everything. Make sure that you bring cash. Now if you're driving, understand that you're not parking anywhere near the parade. Streets are closed, NYPD has barricades everywhere, and the side streets get packed too. Take the train if you can. And a tip from my personal experience, please bring earplugs when those music trucks come by. Those speakers are practically a story tall. You don't realize how loud they are until your entire frame is vibrating. You'll see people representing islands from all across the Caribbean, so bring your flag and dress festive. You'll also see incredible masqueraders in elaborate handmade costumes or masks that can take months to create. Finally, you're going to see wining. It can look pretty intimate if you're unfamiliar with the culture, but wining doesn't automatically equal an invitation. So don't just walk up behind somebody and start wining on them. Get consent, read the room, and behave yourself. As always, follow for more New York City guides from your internet auntie who already went out and figured it out for you. Now go outside, grab your flag, and I'll see you on Eastern Parkway.
