THE JESTER FOUND
OUT WHAT THE KING
DOESN'T KNOW...
This man is paid to make
people laugh, but tonight,
he is the saddest man alive.
His name is Stańczyk, a Polish
court jester who served three
kings. In the next room, a royal
party is happening. Yet he sits
here, completely alone.
He's slumped into the chair so
heavily that the rug crumples
beneath his feet. He stares
into the void, hands clasped.
Something just happened.
On the table, a letter has just
been opened. "Smolensk, 1514."
Moscow took the key eastern
fortress. The city has fallen.
He finds out before
anyone else. While the hall
celebrates, he remains still.
He has dropped his
staff on the floor. There
is no one left to joke to.
Outside the window, a comet
fles past. In ancient times, this
was a sign of trouble incoming.
Pinned to his chest is a medallion
of Poland's sacred holy icon. He
carries his entire homeland.
Now notice one thing, and the
scene falls apart. According to
the title, Queen Bona is giving
the ball in 1514. But she didn't
arrive in Poland until 1518.
The artist mixed these dates
on purpose because the
painting isn't actually about
1514, it was painted in 1862.
In 1862, Poland did not exist
at the time and was occupied
by Russia. The artist was
grieving the entire loss of the
nation rather than just one city.
A year after the painting
was completed, Poland
launched a rebellion that
was brutally suppressed,
making the painting a
prophecy that came true.
Return to the window. Outside is the
silhouette of Wawel Cathedral, the
heart of the country in 1514. The
comet was a bad omen for a country
no longer on the map in 1862.
Return to the medallion. Since
Poland had everything taken
away in 1862, all the jester had
left to wear was the holy icon.
And return to the face. This is
not a 16th century jester. This is
the artist's own face taken from
a self-portrait at 24 years old.
He was the artist of an erased
country, clothed as a fool, and
reading the beginning of the end.
He was the only one who saw
what was coming and he couldn't
do anything except for paint it.
