A narcissistic mother transforms into a victim as she ages because her declining physical power, loss of control, and fading “narcissistic supply” (external validation and attention) force her ego to rely on older defense mechanisms like DARVO (Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender) to survive deep internal shame. Loss of Narcissistic Supply: Younger narcissistic mothers control children through authority, financial dependence, and physical caretaking. Ego Protection and Fragility: Pathological narcissism masks a fragile, deeply inadequate core self. Aging brings physical decline, loss of status, and mortality, which trigger severe “narcissistic injury” (threats to their grandiosity). To avoid confronting this inner emptiness or accepting fault for past abuse, the psyche flips the narrative: if she is suffering, she must be the blameless victim. Externalizing Shame via Projection: Narcissists cannot process accountability. By casting themselves as the victim of “ungrateful” or “cruel” children, they project their own internal cruelty onto others. This allows them to garner sympathy from extended family or communities (via smear campaigns) and restore a distorted sense of righteousness.
