China has a serious problem. It built the second largest economy in the world, but nobody wants to use the yuan as the global reserve currency. In 1974, Henry Kissinger flew to Saudi Arabia and set up the petrodollar, the foundation of the dollar as the world's reserve currency. But China started breaking that system by becoming the largest buyer of Middle Eastern oil. Today, more than half of Middle Eastern oil is sold to China. The Middle East still prefers US dollars because it uses them to buy technology and weapons from the US. But China now builds almost everything the Middle East wants: cars, trucks, planes, AI, infrastructure. So instead of selling oil for dollars, the Middle East can sell it in yuan and buy Chinese tech for a fraction of the price. The more the Middle East buys from China, the more oil it will sell in yuan, turning the petrodollar into the petro yuan.
