I try not to be too cynical about the shoe industry, but there’s more than enough evidence that tapered toe boxes aren’t doing our feet any favors. A 2026 systematic review found that people wearing narrow-toed shoes had more than twice the odds of hallux valgus (bunions) compared with people wearing wide-toed shoes. And a seven-year prospective study found that wearing very narrow toe box shoes earlier in life was associated with developing bunions later on. And yet, the vast majority of mainstream shoes are still designed with a tapered toe box that squeezes the toes together. Maybe that’s because the goal of most shoes is to sell shoes, not necessarily to promote foot health. We’re making some headway when it comes to wider, more foot-shaped shoes, but narrow and tapered is still the reigning trend. If you’re tired of shoes that are wreaking havoc on your feet and leaving you in pain, try barefoot shoes. #barefootshoes
