Wayang Digital Indonesia

Two puppets, one in each hand — Play two leather shadow puppets on the lamp-lit kelir. Your webcam tracks both hands, just as a dalang holds the sticks.

Why it worked

The video successfully bridges traditional cultural art with modern technology, creating a unique and visually engaging demo that invites user participation.

Summary

The creator demonstrates a custom web-based application that uses hand tracking to control digital shadow puppets. He explains his motivation for building the tool to connect with traditional Indonesian puppet art.

Structure

1Introduction to the concept of hand-controlled shadow puppets
2Personal backstory about Wayang art
3Demonstration of the hand tracking interface
4Call to action to try the web application

Product placement

Wayang Digital Indonesia (a) ACTS: the interface is operated to control shadow puppets via hand tracking. Removing it would change the video entirely as it is the subject of the demo.

What if you could control a shadow puppet with just your hands? Wayang is a centuries-old puppet art I only ever watched on TV growing up. Never seen a real show. So I built my own version I can actually play. Hand tracking + vibe coding, and now my hands control the puppets live. Maybe this is my way in before I finally watch the real thing 🎭.
